Odisha Strengthens Infrastructure Focus with New Bridge Repair Policy

Bhubaneswar: Stepping up efforts to modernize Odisha’s infrastructure, the State Government on Tuesday launched a dedicated Bridge Repair Policy, marking a strategic move to ensure the safety and longevity of critical transport networks. The policy was unveiled by Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan during a comprehensive review of major infrastructure projects exceeding ₹50 crore, held at Lok Seva Bhawan.

Speaking at the meeting, the Minister announced that a separate Road Maintenance Policy is also in the works to institutionalize upkeep of road assets across the state. “This is a significant step towards achieving Odisha’s vision of becoming a developed state by 2036. Our focus must remain on quality, timely delivery, and technology-driven solutions,” he said.

Highlighting the urgent need for regular inspection and maintenance, Harichandan urged engineers and contractors to shift to a modern, performance-oriented work culture, incorporating tools such as artificial intelligence to track progress and enhance project execution.

The Minister also took stock of several major projects, including the Berhampur Bypass, Khordha Bypass, and the Puri-Konark Road, expressing satisfaction with ongoing work but instructing officials to expedite delayed projects. He further emphasized the need to resolve persistent challenges such as land acquisition and forest clearance issues.

In a stern message to construction agencies, Harichandan directed officials to investigate cases where contractors outsource work in violation of norms and to take strict disciplinary action against defaulters. The Minister was joined by Works Department Principal Secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh, who echoed the call for transparency and accountability in infrastructure delivery.

Senior engineers, department officials, and representatives of construction companies were present during the review meeting, which served as a platform to assess current performance and align future goals with the state’s ambitious development vision.
