Odisha Strengthens Aviation Infrastructure, Pushes for Regional Connectivity

Bhubaneswar: In a major step towards enhancing Odisha’s aviation sector, the third High Power Committee (HPC) meeting on aviation-related developments was held today under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja at Lok Seva Bhavan. The discussions focused on expanding regional connectivity, upgrading key airports, and accelerating the development of the Shree Jagannath International Airport (SJIA) in Puri.

The committee reviewed progress on the upgradation of airports at Jeypore, Amarda Road, and Utkela, addressing land acquisition and forest clearance issues. The Works Department was directed to expedite these developments as the nodal agency. Additionally, discussions emphasized the revised Small Aircraft Scheme (SAS) to enhance connectivity to remote locations like Jeypore, Malkangiri, and Jharsuguda, with a focus on affordable air travel. Plans for a new greenfield airport at Paradip were also discussed, with directives issued for land identification and feasibility studies.

To boost domestic and international air traffic, the state government is considering financial support through Viability Gap Funding (VGF) for airline operators such as IndiGo, Alliance Air, and IndiaOne Air. Another key agenda was the establishment of an Aviation Security Training Institute (ASTI) at Chandaka, aimed at developing a skilled workforce for Odisha’s growing aviation industry. The committee also reviewed proposals for restructuring the Directorate of Aviation with improved infrastructure and enhanced manpower.

Addressing the meeting, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja highlighted the vital role of aviation in driving economic growth, tourism, and connectivity. “Odisha is fast emerging as an aviation hub with world-class infrastructure and forward-thinking policies. These developments will be crucial in realizing the vision of Viksit Odisha,” he stated.

The meeting saw participation from key stakeholders, including the Development Commissioner-cum-ACS, Principal Secretaries of Law, Finance, and Works, as well as senior officials from the Health & Family Welfare, Tourism, Housing & Urban Development, Commerce & Transport Departments, IDCO, and Biju Patnaik International Airport.
