Odisha Sees Surge in Electric Vehicle Registrations, Over 1.22 Lakh EVs Registered in Three Years

Bhubaneswar: Odisha has witnessed a significant surge in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), with a total of 1,22,590 EVs being registered in the state over the past three years, Commerce & Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena informed the Odisha Assembly on Thursday.

In response to a query raised by BJD MLA from Basta, Minister Jena shared the year-wise statistics of EV registrations, highlighting the growing momentum in the state’s transition towards cleaner transportation. According to the minister, the registration details are as follows:

  • 2021-22: 10,388 EVs
  • 2022-23: 32,333 EVs
  • 2023-24: 52,025 EVs
  • 2024-25 (up to November 24): 27,844 EVs

The state government’s efforts to promote the adoption of electric vehicles have played a key role in this growth. Minister Jena emphasized the success of the Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy-2021, which provides significant incentives to EV buyers. As part of this policy, buyers are exempt from motor vehicle tax and eligible for subsidies, making EVs more affordable.

The subsidies under the policy include:

  • ₹5,000 per kilowatt (kW) for two-wheelers, with a maximum cap of ₹20,000
  • ₹30,000 for three-wheelers
  • ₹10,000 per kW for four-wheelers, with a maximum cap of ₹1,50,000

These financial incentives have proven to be an attractive proposition for consumers looking to transition to electric mobility.

In addition to subsidies, the state government is also working to expand the EV infrastructure. Minister Jena highlighted ongoing efforts to establish EV charging stations across major cities in the state, which will further bolster the growth of the electric vehicle ecosystem and make it more convenient for people to adopt EVs.

With increasing registrations and policy support, Odisha is positioning itself as a leader in the adoption of sustainable and eco-friendly transportation, aligning with national goals to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner alternatives.
