Odisha Reports First Case of Black Fungus Disease

Bhubaneswar: The first case of Black Fungus disease also known as Mucormycosis has been reported from a 71 year old Covid patient in Bhubaneswar.

A native of Jajpur was admitted in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Monday. The patient has an uncontrolled diabetes and was tested Covid positive on April 20. He was in home isolation since testing positive. On May 8 he reported swelling in eyes and black discharge from nose.

His nasal endoscopy showed black deposits on turbinate. He is being given antidiabetic and antifungal treatment. His condition is stable.

On Sunday, the central government released an advisory for screening, diagnosis and management of the Black fungus infection among Covid survivors.

According to the experts, comorbid people especially those suffering from chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer, renal issues and heart ailments are more prone to the infection.

Early detection of the disease along with strict monitoring of sugar level, rational use of steroid will help in preventing the disease.
