Odisha Reels Under Heat Wave as Temperatures Soar

Bhubaneswar: The scorching summer heat continues to grip Odisha, with Sambalpur recording the highest temperature of the season at 42.2°C. As the mercury rises, several districts are experiencing intense heat wave conditions, with at least four cities surpassing the 40°C mark.

Weather scientist Umashankar Dash, in a social media update on X (formerly Twitter), confirmed the rising temperatures, noting that Jharsuguda followed closely at 41.8°C, while Rourkela (40.5°C) and Hirakud (40.2°C) also recorded extreme heat. Other affected areas included Kendujhar (39.1°C), Chandbali (39°C), and Bhubaneswar (38.6°C).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its Midday Weather Bulletin, has issued a Red Warning for severe heat wave conditions, particularly in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Kalahandi on March 16. The Orange Warning applies to Angul, Sundargarh, Sonepur, and Boudh, while a Yellow Warning has been issued for Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Balangir, Gajapati, Cuttack, and Khurda.

With the extreme heat posing health risks, the IMD has urged residents to take necessary precautions, including avoiding prolonged sun exposure, staying hydrated, and wearing light, breathable clothing. The advisory also recommends farmers to continue irrigation for their crops and ensure adequate water supply for livestock.

The heat wave is expected to persist in the coming days, with authorities closely monitoring the situation to prevent heat-related illnesses and ensure public safety.
