Bhubaneswar: Odisha has experienced its first heatwave of the season as the maximum temperature crossed the 40°C mark today. The western Odisha town of Boudh recorded the highest temperature in the state at 40.5°C, marking a significant rise in temperatures, according to the regional centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Balangir, another town in western Odisha, recorded the second-highest temperature at 39.9°C, while several other towns reported temperatures nearing the 40°C mark. Baripada, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, and Titlagarh all saw maximum temperatures ranging between 39°C and 40°C.

In addition to these areas, places like Hirakud, Bhawanipatna, Sonepur, Paralakhemundi, Bhadrak, and Rourkela recorded maximum temperatures between 38°C and 39°C. The state capital, Bhubaneswar, saw a temperature of 36.6°C, while Cuttack recorded a slightly higher temperature of 37°C.

The IMD has forecasted a further rise in temperatures by 2 to 3°C across the state over the next five days. With heat levels intensifying, the IMD has issued an Orange warning for several districts, including Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Balangir, and Boudh, warning of heatwave conditions until March 17.

As the temperature rises, authorities have urged the public to take precautions, including staying hydrated and avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
