Odisha Plans Major Makeover of Chandipur Beach to Secure Blue Flag Tag and Boost Global Tourism

Bhubaneswar: To enhance Odisha’s global tourism appeal, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida on Friday announced a comprehensive development plan for the unique Chandipur beach in Balasore district, with the ambitious goal of securing the prestigious Blue Flag certification.

Describing Chandipur as “perhaps the most beautiful beach in our state with natural landscaping,” Parida, who also holds the Tourism portfolio, said the beach’s rare natural phenomenon—where the sea recedes up to 5 km during low tide—makes it an unmatched attraction. “People visit here to witness this natural wonder. Balasore will be a focus area to draw global tourists to our state,” she stated.

To bolster infrastructure and sustainability efforts, the Deputy CM announced an ₹11 crore proposal for beach development. “While ₹2 crore has already been sanctioned, the remaining ₹9 crore will be released immediately. We need to maintain its picture beauty,” she said, emphasizing both preservation and promotion.

Parida also underscored the importance of attracting private investment to activate the region’s tourism potential. “There is a lack of investment in this area, but it has abundant natural attractions and nearby islands. Numerous amenities and activities can be introduced through planned development,” she said. The government, she assured, will support shops and business establishments to enhance the visitor experience.

Taking a step further, she reiterated her vision of making Odisha a wedding and event tourism hub, proposing beachfront events aligned with eco-tourism standards. Plans include introducing water sports, organizing eco-retreat camps, and creating experiences that are both sustainable and attractive to domestic and international travelers.

Securing the Blue Flag certification—a globally recognized eco-label for beaches—would place Chandipur among a select group of environmentally sound and tourist-friendly destinations worldwide.

Parida, accompanied by local legislators and district officials, conducted an aerial survey of Chandipur and Talasari beaches, reviewed tourism infrastructure, and gave on-ground instructions to fast-track development.
