Bhubaneswar: Amid reports of five confirmed cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in India, Odisha’s Public Health Director, Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, has called for vigilance while assuring the public that there is no cause for panic.
The latest cases include two children undergoing treatment in Chennai, raising concerns as the virus has now been reported in major cities like Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata. Although Odisha has yet to detect any cases, health officials remain cautious about its potential arrival.
Dr. Mishra underscored that the state is prepared to handle the situation. “The HMPV virus has not been detected in Odisha. The two children in Bengaluru who tested positive have no travel history, indicating localized transmission. This virus has been known since 2001, and we are equipped to respond effectively,” he stated.
Preparations are underway, with AIIMS Bhubaneswar designated as the testing hub for HMPV. Dr. Mishra noted that the state government is awaiting detailed guidelines from central health authorities but has already initiated precautionary measures to safeguard public health.
Highlighting the importance of awareness, Dr. Mishra urged senior citizens and individuals with pre-existing conditions to remain alert. “If you experience cold-like symptoms, seek medical attention promptly. People over 65 years of age, in particular, should exercise extra caution,” he advised.
Human Metapneumovirus, which primarily affects the respiratory system, can cause mild to severe symptoms, especially in vulnerable groups like children and the elderly. With Odisha closely monitoring the developments, health officials assured the public of swift action to prevent any potential outbreak.
