Odisha Minister Takes Action Amid Rising Potato Prices

Bhubaneswar: Amid escalating potato prices in Odisha, Food & Supplies Minister Krushna Chandra Patra visited a potato storage facility in Aiginia on Friday to evaluate the situation and find solutions.

The state has seen a sharp increase in potato prices, with retail costs soaring from Rs 30 per kg on July 20 to Rs 45-50 per kg within a few days, a nearly 50% jump. This price hike has left many consumers struggling.

During his visit, Minister Patra assessed the potato stock and assured the public that there are enough potatoes to meet demand for the next 7-8 days. He issued a stern warning to traders against creating artificial scarcity, engaging in black marketing, or manipulating prices.

“I am aware of the halt in potato supplies from West Bengal,” Patra said. “But I urge Odisha traders not to make the situation worse by black marketing this essential kitchen staple.”

To tackle the price surge, Patra announced plans for a crucial meeting to discuss and implement necessary measures. “If needed, we are ready to import potatoes from Uttar Pradesh to stabilize the market,” he added, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring stable and fair prices for consumers.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) Naveen Patnaik has also taken steps to address the issue, writing to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee requesting her to intervene and ensure a smooth supply of potatoes to Odisha. “As you know, potatoes are an essential item for our people. Due to the rains, there has been a short supply of potatoes in the Odisha market, resulting in an artificial price hike adding to the sufferings of the common person,” Naveen wrote.
