Bhubaneswar: Amidst ongoing discussions and speculations surrounding the possibility of a liquor ban in Odisha, Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Minister Nityananda Gond asserted on Wednesday that prohibition is crucial for fostering a healthier society.
Addressing reporters at an event commemorating the International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking held at the Convention Hall of Lok Seva Bhavan in Bhubaneswar, Minister Nityananda Gond emphasized the detrimental effects of alcohol addiction on individuals and families. “Alcohol addiction is ruining lives and causing distress. Our government is considering making Odisha free of liquor and will also discourage the use of narcotics. Discussions will be held with the Excise and other concerned departments, and measures will be implemented in a phased manner,” he affirmed.
The Minister’s statements come in the wake of growing concerns over substance abuse and its social implications, echoing sentiments similar to states like Bihar, Gujarat, Mizoram, and Nagaland where alcohol is currently prohibited.
The recent talks about a possible liquor ban gained traction following unsubstantiated social media rumors earlier this month, prompting the Information & Public Relations (I&PR) Department to clarify that there were no official plans for a statewide liquor ban starting August 15. The department cautioned against the spread of misinformation and urged citizens to rely on verified information from official sources.
