New Delhi: In a step towards adopting sustainable waste management practices, Odisha’s Minister for Housing & Urban Development, Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, today visited the advanced Waste-to-Energy Plant at Okhla, managed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The facility, a significant milestone in urban waste management, currently processes nearly 2,000 metric tonnes (MT) of municipal solid waste every day and generates around 23 megawatts (MW) of green energy.
During the visit, Dr. Mahapatra was briefed on the plant’s operational mechanisms, technological innovations, and environmental benefits. Officials also discussed the upcoming expansion plans that aim to boost the plant’s capacity to process 3,000 MT of waste daily and produce up to 30 MW of electricity.
Expressing his admiration for the facility’s efficiency, Dr. Mahapatra noted that replicating such initiatives could provide effective solutions for waste disposal while contributing to Odisha’s clean energy goals. He assured that the concept would be carefully studied for potential implementation back home.
Mr. Sandeep Dutta, Head of Project Management at the Okhla Waste-to-Energy Plant, along with senior officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, guided the Minister through the plant operations. Dr. Mahapatra was accompanied by Mr. Binay Dash, Additional Secretary, Housing & Urban Development Department, Odisha.
The Minister applauded the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the project team for their innovative and eco-friendly approach to waste management, highlighting the importance of turning waste into a valuable energy resource to support the vision of a cleaner and greener India.
