Odisha Launches English Communication Training for Elementary Teachers

Bhubaneswar: To enhance English communication skills among elementary teachers, the State Institute for Languages and Teachers Training (SILTT), Odisha, in collaboration with Azim Premji University (APU), Bangalore, has initiated the English Language Enrichment Course. This program aims to empower teachers across Odisha with better English proficiency to improve the quality of education in classrooms.

The initiative began in July 2024, when 60 teachers—two from each of the state’s 30 districts—were trained as Master Trainers by experts from SILTT and APU. These trainers are now conducting sessions for 500 teachers across 314 blocks in 10 districts, including Khordha, Cuttack, Angul, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Koraput, Jharsuguda, and Ganjam.

The first phase of training, held from November 18 to November 22, marked the start of a nine-week program. The course employs a blend of virtual and face-to-face training sessions, ensuring flexibility and accessibility for teachers. This hybrid model is designed to provide continuous learning opportunities while accommodating teachers’ regular schedules.

The program is closely monitored by SILTT and APU, with Director Sumita Das and APU faculty member Jenie Alex personally visiting various districts to oversee the sessions. Their inspections highlight the program’s emphasis on maintaining quality and addressing the specific needs of participating teachers.

By equipping elementary teachers with enhanced English communication skills, the initiative seeks to improve their teaching capabilities and foster better learning environments for students. The long-term goal is to enable teachers to deliver lessons more effectively in English, aligning with the growing emphasis on multilingual education in India.

This pioneering program underscores Odisha’s commitment to transforming the education landscape by investing in teacher development. With the support of institutions like Azim Premji University, the state is setting a benchmark for collaborative efforts in education reform.
