Odisha Introduces ‘Water Bell’ System in Schools to Combat Rising Temperatures

Bhubaneswar: In response to the escalating temperatures, the Odisha government has rolled out the ‘water bell’ system in all schools across the state to ensure students remain adequately hydrated during class hours.

The initiative, spearheaded by the School and Mass Education department, aims to mitigate the risks associated with heat-related ailments among students.

Under the new system, school bells will ring thrice a day at designated intervals – 8:30 AM, 10 AM, and 11 AM – prompting students to drink water. Teachers will monitor and encourage students to hydrate themselves during these intervals.

The directive has been communicated to all Block Education Officers (BEOs) and District Education Officers (DEOs) to enforce the implementation of the ‘water bell’ system in every school across the state.

In addition to promoting hydration, teachers are advising students to use umbrellas and caps when outdoors to shield themselves from direct sunlight, reducing the risk of sunstroke.

The weather department has cautioned citizens to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures to mitigate the impact of extreme heat on public health.
