Odisha Hosts Trophy Gaurav Yatra, Celebrating Women’s Asian Hockey Championship

Bhubaneswar: In a moment of pride and enthusiasm, Odisha welcomed the “Trophy Gaurav Yatra” today as it made a grand and symbolic stop in the state ahead of the upcoming Bihar Women’s Asian Hockey Championship Trophy 2024. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the iconic Peace Pagoda at Dhauligiri, senior officials from the Sports & Youth Services Department and the Hockey Association of Odisha unveiled the prestigious trophy, showcasing the state’s unwavering commitment to sports and excellence.

Following the unveiling, the trophy was displayed at Kalinga Stadium, a venue renowned for hosting major hockey events and a symbol of Odisha’s sporting legacy. The event was attended by key figures, including Siddharth Das, Director of Sports & Youth Services, Dilip Tirkey, President of the Hockey Association of Odisha, Deepankar Mohapatra, CEO of the Hockey Promotion Council of Odisha, BK Swain, and numerous senior officials and athletes from various sports disciplines.

Deepankar Mohapatra expressed pride in the event, stating, “The arrival of the ‘Trophy Gaurav Yatra’ in Odisha underscores the state’s commitment to supporting and promoting Indian hockey. Hockey holds a special place in our hearts, and we are thrilled to be part of the trophy tour for this prestigious championship. Odisha extends its best wishes to the India Women’s team.”

The “Trophy Gaurav Yatra” aims to raise awareness about hockey among young girls, fostering excitement for the prestigious tournament. Odisha has produced a remarkable roster of talented female hockey players who have represented India at various national and international levels, including stars like Deep Grace Ekka, Lilima Minz, Sunita Lakra, Namita Toppo, Sunelita Toppo, and Jyoti Chattri. These athletes are not only a source of pride for Odisha but also serve as inspirations for the next generation of female hockey players in the state.

The eighth edition of the Asian Hockey Championship (Women) Trophy is set to take place in Rajgir, Bihar, from 11 to 20 November 2024, featuring teams from India, China, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand. As the reigning champions, India will aim to defend their title in what promises to be a fiercely competitive tournament.
