Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has approved a significant increase in the minimum support price (MSP) for Kharif millet under the Shree Anna Abhiyan, aiming to empower farmers and boost millet cultivation in the state.
During a review meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan, chaired by Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Principal Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment, the MSP for Mandia (finger millet) was announced as ₹4,290 per quintal for the marketing season 2024-25. Farmers will also receive an additional incentive of ₹210 per quintal, bringing the total financial assistance to ₹4,500 per quintal.
Dr. Padhee emphasized the need for a transparent procurement process, ensuring that farmers receive their rightful dues without delays. He issued a stern warning against any irregularities, stating that stringent action would be taken against those found guilty of depriving farmers of their benefits.
Additionally, the department was directed to expedite awareness campaigns to educate farmers and the public about the enhanced MSP and the benefits of the Shree Anna Abhiyan.
Senior officials from the Agriculture Department, Supply Department, Tribal Development Department, and representatives from the Shree Anna Abhiyan attended the meeting. They presented progress reports and outlined plans to ensure smooth implementation of the initiative.
The government’s move to increase the MSP for millet aligns with its broader mission to promote millet cultivation as a sustainable and nutritious crop. It is expected to provide a significant boost to farmers, especially in tribal and rain-fed regions, and enhance the state’s agricultural economy.
