Odisha Govt to Provide Free Vaccination for Those in Contact with Leprosy Patients

Bhubaneswar: In a significant step toward eradicating leprosy, the Odisha government has announced plans to provide free vaccination to individuals who come into contact with leprosy patients. Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling made the announcement while attending a Leprosy Awareness Campaign organized by the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare.

Despite advancements in medical treatment, leprosy remains a public health challenge due to social stigma and superstition, leading many infected individuals to delay seeking medical attention. To address this issue, the Odisha Health Department is already distributing free medicines to leprosy patients and is now expanding its efforts through a vaccination initiative.

Dr. Mahaling emphasized that India aims to become leprosy-free by 2030, with a focused strategy in place for Odisha. The new vaccination campaign will specifically target family members and caregivers of leprosy patients, reducing the risk of transmission and accelerating eradication efforts.

The announcement coincided with the observance of World Leprosy Eradication Day in Bhubaneswar, where the World Health Organization (WHO), the Sasakawa Foundation, and the Odisha government collaborated to promote a leprosy-free state and nation. The event saw participation from leprosy-affected individuals across various districts in Odisha and 18 other states.

Speaking at the event, Minister Mahaling reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eliminating leprosy, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision and under the leadership of the Chief Minister. He urged greater awareness and proactive medical intervention to ensure that Odisha moves toward becoming leprosy-free.
