Odisha Govt Pushes for Early Operationalization of Medical Colleges in Talcher and Phulbani

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is making concerted efforts to expedite the functionalization of Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College & Hospital in Talcher, Angul, and Government Medical College & Hospital in Phulbani, Kandhamal. Once operational, these institutions will significantly enhance healthcare services in the region and provide quality medical education.

In a high-level virtual meeting chaired by Aswathy S., Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Department, officials reviewed the progress of both medical colleges. The discussion focused on ensuring the readiness of infrastructure, medical equipment, and faculty recruitment while identifying any remaining gaps that need to be addressed for early functionalization.

To fast-track the process, district collectors and key officials have been directed to hold weekly meetings to resolve pending issues efficiently. The government’s proactive approach highlights its commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas.

The establishment of these medical colleges aligns with the state’s broader vision of expanding healthcare access and medical education in Odisha. By ensuring the timely opening of these institutions, the government aims to provide top-tier healthcare services to citizens while also creating new opportunities for aspiring medical professionals.

The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Dr. Poma Tudu, Managing Director of OSMCL; Angul Collector Abdaal M. Akhtar; Kandhamal Collector Amrit Ruturaj; Dr. Bijay Kumar Mohapatra, Director of Health Services; Dr. Santosh Mishra, Director of Medical Education & Training; Dr. Usharani Sahoo, Additional Secretary; Prof. Dr. Kirtirekha Mohapatra, Dean & Principal of Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College; and Prof. Dr. Debaprasad Mohanty, Dean of Government Medical College & Hospital in Phulbani. Key district officials, including CDM and PHOs, and Superintendent Engineers, also participated in the discussions.
