Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is planning to develop a new city near Bhubaneswar to accommodate the state’s rapidly growing population. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi discussed the proposal with senior officials while reviewing key urban development projects at Lok Seva Bhawan on Friday.
Alongside the new city, the government is also considering the establishment of a Greater Economic Region, integrating Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, and Paradip (Jagatsinghpur district). The ambitious plan aims to develop an 8,500 sq km area with world-class infrastructure, ensuring long-term urban and economic sustainability. Designed to meet the region’s needs for the next 50 years, this initiative is a major step toward realizing the vision of a Viksit Odisha (Developed Odisha) by 2036.
During the review meeting, CM Majhi also assessed the progress of the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project, which is expected to improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in the capital and surrounding areas.
With a strategic focus on urban expansion and infrastructure development, the government aims to position Odisha as a major economic and industrial hub in the coming decades.
