Bhubaneswar: In response to the ongoing potato crisis in Odisha, the state government has launched an initiative to provide potatoes to consumers at a fixed price of ₹30 per kilogram. The measure, implemented in partnership with the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), aims to ensure accessibility and affordability of the essential staple amid soaring market prices.
Under the first phase, the government procured 60 tonnes of potatoes, transported in three trucks to Bhubaneswar. These were sold at key locations across the city, including in front of the Additional District Magistrate’s office and at government-operated fair price shops.
The Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department stated that the initiative is designed to mitigate the impact of the shortage on households by stabilizing supply and offering potatoes at a reasonable cost.
Following its initial rollout in Bhubaneswar, the program will expand to other major cities, including Cuttack, Rourkela, Jajpur, Balasore, Balangir, Sambalpur, and Berhampur. Government retail outlets in these locations will sell potatoes at the fixed price, ensuring equitable distribution across urban centers.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to address supply chain disruptions affecting essential commodities. By partnering with NAFED, the Odisha government aims to stabilize market dynamics while safeguarding consumers from price spikes during the crisis.
Residents have welcomed the move, noting its importance in reducing household expenses during a time of economic strain. Officials assured the public that steps are being taken to ensure steady supplies and prevent further escalation of the crisis.
