Odisha Govt Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Liquor Trade, Plans Legal Reforms

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has ramped up its efforts to curb the illegal liquor trade, taking strict legal action against those involved and pushing for stronger enforcement. Moving forward, this momentum will be reinforced through proposed legal reforms that will be incorporated into the upcoming excise policy, aiming to completely eliminate illicit liquor activities and enhance regulatory measures.

During a review meeting held at Lok Seva Bhavan, Prithviraj Harichandan, Minister of Law, Public Works, and Excise, urged excise officers and staff to enhance their efficiency and work towards upholding the reputation of the state. He emphasized the need for stringent enforcement and accountability within the Excise Department to ensure greater control over liquor production and sales.

An official press release stated that the minister conducted a detailed review of the department’s operations, engaging with district Excise Superintendents to assess enforcement activities. Discussions covered key issues such as revenue collection, the number of registered cases, mahua flower sales, and the production and sale of country liquor. The status of seized vehicles used in illegal liquor transportation was also examined as part of the broader crackdown on illicit activities.

Highlighting the need for institutional strengthening, the minister stressed the urgency of filling vacant positions within the department and providing regular training for officers and staff to enhance their efficiency. The meeting also addressed infrastructure challenges, including the construction of staff quarters and the operational status of excise depots in various districts, which play a crucial role in liquor regulation and enforcement.

The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Commissioner-cum-Secretary Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar, Excise Commissioner Narasingh Bhol, OSBC Managing Director Amber Kar, OSBC General Manager Sanjay Kumar Rout, along with various district Excise Superintendents and departmental officers.
