Odisha Govt Doubles Grain Transportation Rate Under Supplementary Nutrition Programme

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has announced a significant increase in the transportation rate for grains such as rice and wheat under the Supplementary Nutrition Programme, raising the maximum price per quintal from ₹75 to ₹150.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi approved the proposal, according to a press release from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO). The decision aims to address escalating fuel costs and other logistical expenses, with the revised rates being the first hike since 2011.

Under the Supplementary Nutrition Programme, rice is transported to Anganwadi Centers for Hot Cooked Meals, while Take Home Ration is distributed to women’s self-help groups. Transport agents play a crucial role in ensuring timely delivery of these essential supplies.

The new rate will apply only to newly recruited transport agents, as clarified by the government. Existing agents will continue to operate under the current pricing structure. For new agents, the actual transportation cost will be determined through a tender process, with ₹150 per quintal set as the maximum allowable rate.

This move is expected to enhance the efficiency of grain delivery, ensuring better implementation of the programme that serves vulnerable populations across the state. By addressing the cost challenges faced by transport agents, the government aims to maintain the uninterrupted supply of essential nutrition to beneficiaries.
