
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has established the 6th State Finance Commission, appointing a chairman and four members to steer its work, as per a notification issued by the Finance Department today.
The commission has been formed under Article 243-I and 243-Y of the Constitution of India, along with provisions outlined in the Odisha Finance Commission (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1993.
Retired IAS officer Arun Kumar Panda has been named the chairman of the commission. Accompanying him are esteemed members: Prof. Asit Ranjan Mohanty from XIMB, Prof. Amaresh Samantray from the Department of Economics at Pondicherry University, and Dr. Bibhu Prasad Nayak, a professor at TISS. Dr. Satya Priya Rath (IAS), Additional Secretary in the Finance Department, will serve as the member secretary.
The tenure of the chairman and other members is set for six months, as specified in the notification.
The commission’s primary role is to provide recommendations on the distribution of taxes, duties, tolls, and fees between the state government and the three-tier Panchayati Raj institutions as well as Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
