
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government took a significant step toward ensuring passenger safety in inland water transport through its flagship scheme, Sahid Baji Rout Noujatra Suraksha Yojana. The Commerce & Transport Department, under the leadership of Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary, conducted a virtual meeting with District Collectors and District Magistrates to discuss the scheme’s implementation and progress across the state.
The scheme, named in honor of Sahid Baji Rout, Odisha’s youngest martyr, focuses on providing life-saving equipment such as lifebuoys, life jackets, and fire extinguishers to boats and launches operating in the region.
The first phase of distributing life-saving appliances has been successfully completed, and the second phase is currently underway.
During the meeting, district administrations were briefed on the scheme’s guidelines, including eligibility criteria, implementation protocols, and their roles and responsibilities.Usha Padhee emphasized the importance of assessing local requirements for safety equipment and instructed the administrations to submit requisitions to the Directorate of Ports and Inland Water Transport within seven days.
The meeting also focused on collecting feedback from the first phase of distribution to ensure continuous improvement in implementing the scheme.
Speaking on the occasion, Usha Padhee reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing passenger safety. She said, “Sahid Baji Rout Noujatra Suraksha Yojana reflects the Odisha Government’s dedication to improving safety standards in inland water transport. We urge all stakeholders to work collectively in implementing this initiative, ensuring safer journeys for passengers while promoting sustainable transport practices.”
