Odisha Govt Boosts Kendu Leaf Pluckers’ Welfare, announces 50 percent bonus

Bhubaneswar: In a significant move aimed at enhancing the well-being of Kendu leaf pluckers, the Odisha Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, has announced a substantial increase in bonuses and additional benefits for the current crop season.

According to 5T Chairman Kartik Pandian, the Chief Minister declared a 50% bonus for Kendu leaf pluckers, and this amount will be directly deposited into their bank accounts. In addition, binders and temporary workers will receive a 10% incentive, along with an extension of one month’s additional work for temporary employees.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister disclosed an increase in the price of kendu leaf bundles. The 20-leaf bundle has been raised from Rs 1.40 to Rs 1.60, while the 40-leaf bundle sees an increase from Rs 2.80 to Rs 3.20.

The government has also approved the wage revision proposal for temporary employees, with a 50% increase in their TA (Travel Allowance) and Cycle Allowance. Notably, pensioners can now join the social security scheme until the age of 62, extending the age limit from the previous 60 years.

Looking ahead to the new crop season starting in April, Kendu leaf pluckers’ families will receive financial assistance of Rs 25,000 for each daughter’s wedding.

5T Chairman Kartik Pandian conveyed the Chief Minister’s decision during a public meeting in Sambalpur’s Reirakhol, where a video message from the Chief Minister was played for the attendees. This initiative will benefit around 9 lakh pluckers, binders, and temporary workers, with the state government allocating over Rs 150 crores for this welfare scheme.

The majority of Kendu leaf beneficiaries are women, with over 95% belonging to scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and other backward classes, making this move a crucial step towards upliftment and empowerment in these communities.
