Odisha Govt Allocates ₹1,315 Crore to Establish State as National ‘Sports Hub’

Bhubaneswar: To position Odisha as a nationwide leader in sports, the state government has allocated ₹1,315 crore for sports and youth services in the fiscal year 2024-25. This represents a ₹98 crore increase from the previous year’s budget of ₹1,217 crore.

Announcing the allocation in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reaffirmed his commitment to advancing sports, developing infrastructure, and supporting athletes across the state. The budget includes ₹1,210 crore for program implementation and ₹105 crore for the establishment, operations, and maintenance (EOM).

Among the highlights of the allocation is ₹952 crore earmarked for the construction of a new world-class stadium in Bhubaneswar, setting up world-class sports academies in four zones, and establishing district-level sports academies. Additionally, the government plans to develop mini stadia and promote sports at the grassroots level to nurture future talent.

Chief Minister Majhi emphasized the importance of these investments, stating, “Sports are not only a means of physical fitness but also a tool for the comprehensive development of youth and a source of pride for our state.”

In line with this vision, the state has launched the Khela Ratna Khoja Abhiyaan, an initiative to identify and cultivate promising young athletes from the grassroots level. This program is expected to foster future champions by providing them with the necessary resources and training from an early age.

Moreover, the government has set aside ₹100 crore for the Yuva Shakti Yojana, which aims to promote the integrated development of Odisha’s youth, encouraging them to participate in sports and other leadership activities.

In recognition of the importance of supporting athletes, the state has allocated ₹65 crore to provide financial assistance to outstanding sportspersons and to organize various competitions. This funding will ensure that Odisha’s athletes have access to the resources they need to compete at national and international levels.

With this increased investment, Odisha is poised to strengthen its reputation as a center of sporting excellence. The state has already gained recognition for hosting major national and international events, and the new infrastructure, along with initiatives like the Khela Ratna Khoja Abhiyaan, will ensure that the next generation of athletes has the facilities and support necessary to achieve success.
