Bhubaneswar: Odisha Governor Raghubar Das on Monday ordered the dissolution of the 16th State Legislative Assembly, as informed by an official notification from the Parliamentary Affairs Department.
“In exercise of the power conferred upon me by Clause (2) (b) of Article-174 of the Constitution of India, I hereby order that the Odisha Legislative Assembly constituted vide Notification No. 308/OR-LA/2019 dated 25th May, 2019 Of Election Commission of India, shall stand dissolved with effect from the date a newly elected Legislature is constituted by the Election Commission of India,” the notification stated.
This decision follows the recommendation made earlier today by the State Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. The Cabinet convened for its final meeting and resolved to advise the Governor to dissolve the Legislative Assembly, one day before the counting of votes from the recent elections held in the state.
The 16th Odisha Legislative Assembly was constituted on May 25, 2019, and its dissolution paves the way for the formation of a new legislative body following the completion of the election process.
The counting of votes, scheduled for tomorrow, will determine the composition of the new Assembly.
