Odisha Gears Up for Major Road Safety Push with Zero Accident Development Program, Capacity Building Initiatives

Bhubaneswar: To enhance road safety and reduce traffic-related fatalities, the Commerce and Transport Department of Odisha convened a high-level meeting to review and strategize ongoing and upcoming road safety measures. The meeting was chaired by Principal Secretary Usha Padhee, Transport Commissioner Amitabh Thakur, and renowned road safety expert Prof. Venkatesh Balasubramanian from IIT Madras.

A key highlight of the meeting was the forthcoming rollout of the Zero Accident Development (ZAD) program, which marks a major milestone in Odisha’s efforts to improve road safety infrastructure and awareness. The initiative is set to be launched soon and is expected to pave the way for a data-driven and coordinated approach to accident prevention across the state.

As part of the broader road safety mission, the state government will host the Chintan Shibira, a dedicated brainstorming and stakeholder engagement event. Supported fully by the Odisha Government, the event will bring together experts, policymakers, and practitioners to deliberate on best practices and formulate a unified vision for road safety.

Addressing the need for systemic capacity building, Prof. Balasubramanian recommended specialized brainstorming sessions and training modules for master trainers, accident investigation officers, healthcare professionals, school teachers, and other key actors. These programs aim to strengthen institutional capabilities and improve the effectiveness of road safety interventions at the grassroots level.

The meeting also underlined the importance of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) strategies in promoting safe driving behavior. Participants discussed the need to submit IEC materials to the department for evaluation and use in public campaigns.

In a forward-looking step, officials requested the creation of a simple and dynamic dashboard for daily review and monitoring of road safety metrics in Odisha. The dashboard will support evidence-based decision-making and help track the implementation and impact of ongoing initiatives.

Concluding the session, all stakeholders reiterated their commitment to working in unison toward a safer road environment in Odisha. With the ZAD program, strategic dialogues like Chintan Shibira, and enhanced capacity building on the horizon, Odisha is poised to make substantial progress in reducing road accidents and building a robust road safety ecosystem.
