Odisha FC wins over Mohun Bagan Super Giant in ISL Semifinal

Bhubaneswar: Odisha FC orchestrated a spectacular comeback after conceding an early goal to clinch a thrilling 2-1 victory against Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) in the first leg of their semifinal clash in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 season. The electrifying encounter unfolded at the Kalinga Stadium on Tuesday night, setting the stage for an enthralling showdown between the two formidable sides.

In a match characterized by relentless action and dramatic twists, Mohun Bagan Super Giant took the lead in the third minute when Manvir Singh found the net. However, Odisha FC displayed remarkable resilience, with Carlos Delgado and Roy Krishna scoring pivotal goals to secure a memorable win for the Juggernauts. The victory marked Odisha FC’s first-ever triumph over Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the ISL, breaking a nine-match winless streak against the Mariners.

The intense encounter witnessed all three goals being scored in the first half, highlighting the fierce determination and skill on display from both sides. Despite facing early setbacks, Odisha FC showcased their mettle and capitalized on scoring opportunities to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

The match also saw a flurry of cards, with both teams reduced to 10 men. Delgado of Odisha FC and Armando Sadiku of Mohun Bagan Super Giant were sent off in the 74th and 67th minutes, respectively, after receiving two yellow cards each. Despite the numerical disadvantage, both teams continued to battle fiercely until the final whistle.

Manvir Singh’s early goal for Mohun Bagan Super Giant showcased his exceptional talent and set the tone for a gripping encounter. However, Odisha FC responded swiftly, with Delgado equalizing nine minutes later from a well-delivered corner by Ahmed Jahouh. The momentum shifted decisively in Odisha FC’s favor when Roy Krishna netted the winning goal in the 39th minute, securing his place as the highest goal-scorer for the team in a single ISL season with his 13th strike.

The stage is now set for an intense showdown in the second leg of the semifinal clash, scheduled to take place at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Sunday.
