Bhubaneswar: Odisha is exploring the possibility of establishing a global-level centre for fertilizer innovation as part of its efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and reduce farmers’ dependence on chemical fertilizers.
A delegation from Fertilizer Innovation Centre India (FIC India) met Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo at Lok Seva Bhawan on Saturday to discuss the proposed establishment of an FIC unit in the State.
The discussions centred on developing innovative approaches to fertilizer use, improving soil health and ensuring more efficient management of nutrients in agricultural fields.
Singh Deo said the State Government was giving priority to reducing the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and encouraging organic and sustainable farming practices. He stressed that increasing agricultural productivity must go hand in hand with protecting soil health and addressing farmers’ challenges through long-term solutions.
The FIC India representatives explained that their work focuses on optimising fertilizer application, improving soil quality and promoting efficient nutrient management through research and innovation.
The delegation said the proposed FIC unit in Odisha would be only the second such centre in the world, potentially placing the State on the global map of fertilizer research and innovation.
The meeting also explored the possibility of establishing a dedicated Fertilizer Academy in Odisha. The proposed academy could serve as a platform for advanced research, training, innovation and knowledge-sharing in fertilizer and nutrient management.
The proposed initiatives are expected to complement Odisha’s efforts to build a more sustainable agricultural system while improving productivity and strengthening the long-term resilience of farming communities.
Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment Department Sachin Ramchandra Jadhav, Director of Agriculture Subham Saxena and other senior departmental officials were present at the meeting.
