Odisha Deputy CM Leads Key Discussions at International Conference on Eradicating Hunger

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo has inaugurated the International Conference titled “Hunger-Free World: Professor M.S. Swaminathan’s Vision for an Evergreen Revolution” at the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) in Chennai. Held on August 7th and 8th, the conference is dedicated to celebrating the transformative work of Prof. M.S. Swaminathan, a key figure in India’s Green Revolution.

Prof. Swaminathan’s innovative approach revolutionized agriculture in India, making significant strides toward global food security. This conference honors his legacy and continues his mission to eliminate hunger worldwide.

In his keynote address, Singh Deo acknowledged the challenges faced by Odisha, a state frequently affected by natural disasters. He stressed the potential of climate-resilient agriculture to benefit small and marginal farmers. By diversifying crops and adopting sustainable practices, Singh Deo believes that significant progress can be made toward a hunger-free world.

Singh Deo also advocated for increasing the consumption of traditional foods and reducing food waste as crucial strategies for combating hunger. He highlighted the need for support to small farmers, particularly in tribal regions, to enhance their economic stability and contribute to broader food security goals.

The Deputy Chief Minister’s visit included the unveiling of the new M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation logo and the release of the Impact Report 2023-24. He also launched a nutrition program and a book titled “M.S. Swaminathan’s Conversations With Nitya Rao, A Farmer,” which explores efforts to combat malnutrition in India.

Exhibitions at the conference featured organically produced cereals and food products from Odisha, including Mandia, Suan, and Bajra from Koraput, showcasing the region’s agricultural achievements. The event has attracted experts and scientists from around the world, reflecting a united effort to advance agricultural practices and achieve global food security.
