Odisha CM to Felicitate Indian Hockey Team for Paris Olympics Bronze

Bhubaneswar:: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi is set to felicitate the Indian men’s hockey team, which secured a bronze medal at the recently concluded Paris Olympics 2024, during a grand ceremony at the Lok Seva Bhavan’s Convention Centre in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.

Announcing the celebration at a press conference, Sports Minister Suryabanshi Suraj revealed that a grand welcome is planned for the team. “The hockey heroes will arrive in Odisha tomorrow and will participate in a roadshow from Biju Patnaik International Airport to Kalinga Stadium. Following the roadshow, they will be felicitated by the Chief Minister,” he said.

The Indian men’s hockey team delivered a thrilling performance at the Paris Olympics, coming from behind to defeat Spain 2-1 and secure their second consecutive Olympic medal. The victory also marked a poignant farewell to veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who played his final international match, leaving an indelible mark on Indian hockey.

Minister Suraj highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating, “The team has made India proud by winning another Olympic medal, and their victory has inspired millions of young athletes across the country.”

Odisha’s Commitment to Indian Hockey

Odisha has been instrumental in the resurgence of Indian hockey, playing a pivotal role since becoming the official sponsor of both the men’s and women’s hockey teams in 2018. Following the financial difficulties that arose after Sahara withdrew as the primary sponsor, the Naveen Patnaik-led government stepped in with a ₹120 crore deal, which was later extended by another ten years, ensuring the state’s unwavering support until 2033.

The Mohan Majhi government, which took office in June 2024, further extended this commitment to 2036, underlining Odisha’s long-term dedication to the development of hockey and sports in general. “Our efforts to support and develop sports and athletes in Odisha will continue,” said Minister Suraj.
