Odisha CM Approves Implementation of NEP-2020 in Higher Education from 2024-25 Academic Year

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday officially approved the rollout of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP-2020) across higher education institutions in the state, with implementation set to begin in the current academic year (2024-25).

The new policy will be applied in all public universities and affiliated colleges under the Odisha Higher Education Department, marking a transformative step toward modernizing the state’s education system. According to the NEP-2020 guidelines, the introduction of a four-year undergraduate program will provide students with multiple academic pathways, allowing them to earn a Certificate, Diploma, Degree, or Degree with Honours at different stages of their studies.

In alignment with the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) credit framework, the state-level credit system has been adapted to include practical components such as skill development, internships, and community service. Students will also receive credits for participation in extracurricular activities, including NCC and NSS, fostering a well-rounded education experience. A unique feature of the policy is its multiple entry and exit options, enabling students to complete their degrees over a span of up to seven years.

Chief Minister Majhi emphasized that the NEP-2020’s focus on research, autonomy, and inclusivity will enhance the quality of Odisha’s higher education, making it more aligned with industry needs. The curriculum will integrate practical-based education and hands-on training with industries, providing a more employment-oriented and relevant learning experience.

Under the new framework, the Odisha Higher Education Department has approved a diverse range of courses, including 40 core graduate subjects, 112 multidisciplinary courses, 14 vocational courses, 56 value-added courses, and 84 skill development courses. Additionally, two dedicated skill development courses will be available to support students’ career readiness.
