Bhubaneswar: Odisha has initiated efforts to position itself as a leader in the emerging field of agrivoltaics (AgriPV), with stakeholders from the energy and agriculture sectors coming together to chart a roadmap for integrating renewable energy generation with farming activities. The discussions took place at a high-level workshop on “Scaling AgriPV in Odisha for Climate-Resilient Growth” held in Bhubaneswar on Friday.
Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo inaugurated the workshop and underscored the potential of AgriPV to create a win-win model for farmers by enabling them to generate additional income from solar energy while continuing agricultural operations. He said the initiative aligns with Odisha’s broader vision of promoting climate-resilient development and accelerating the transition to clean energy.
The event brought together policymakers, energy experts, project developers and representatives of the agriculture sector to discuss strategies for scaling up AgriPV projects across the state. Several important initiatives aimed at strengthening Odisha’s renewable energy ecosystem were unveiled during the programme.
Among the key launches was a report titled “Empowering Farmers through AgriPV”, prepared jointly by GRIDCO Ltd. and the Vasudha Foundation, which outlines the opportunities and policy pathways for expanding agrivoltaic systems in Odisha. The workshop also witnessed the launch of the Odisha State Energy Action Plan (OSEAP) web platform, a digital tool designed to support long-term energy planning and decision-making.
In another major development, two 150-metre Wind Resource Assessment Masts were inaugurated at Sonapur and Gopalpur in Ganjam district to facilitate scientific assessment of wind energy potential in the region. Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Purchase Agreements were also announced for a 125 MW/500 MWh storage project that will be implemented across six substations to strengthen grid reliability and renewable energy integration.
Additional Chief Secretary of the Energy Department Vishal Kumar Dev said Odisha is adopting a comprehensive approach to energy transition by combining renewable energy expansion, energy storage solutions and advanced planning mechanisms. He noted that such initiatives would help the state meet rising energy demand while ensuring sustainability.
GRIDCO Managing Director Dr. Satyapriya Rath highlighted the role of AgriPV in driving inclusive growth, stating that the convergence of agriculture and renewable energy can create new economic opportunities for rural communities. He added that energy storage and modern planning tools would further enhance the effectiveness of Odisha’s clean energy transition.
The workshop concluded with technical sessions focusing on policy support, financing models and implementation strategies needed to scale AgriPV projects. Participants stressed the importance of collaboration among government agencies, energy companies, financial institutions and farmers to realise the full potential of agrivoltaics in Odisha.
