Bhubaneswar: In a landmark decision aimed at bolstering higher education in Odisha, the state cabinet on Saturday approved amendments to the Odisha Universities Act, 1989. The changes are intended to address longstanding challenges in governance, recruitment, and academic excellence across universities in the state.
An official statement highlighted that the amendments will empower universities with greater autonomy, streamline administrative processes, and improve governance structures. By reintroducing the Senate and forming committees such as the Building and Works Committee and the Finance Committee, the amendments aim to strengthen decision-making by involving academic professionals and fostering accountability.
A key focus of the reform is on addressing issues in the recruitment process, which has often been stalled by court cases and procedural delays. The revised act seeks to establish a transparent and time-bound recruitment system, ensuring that vacant teaching positions are filled promptly to avoid academic disruptions.
The amendments also align with the National Education Policy (NEP), incorporating transformative elements like promoting multidisciplinary education, skill development for employability, and enhanced access through distance learning programs. These provisions aim to make higher education in Odisha more inclusive and responsive to the demands of a dynamic job market.
The state government envisions these reforms as a step toward creating a robust higher education ecosystem in Odisha, enhancing both the quality of teaching and the employability of students. By addressing critical challenges and embracing modern educational frameworks, the amendments are expected to significantly elevate the standards of university education in the state.
