Odisha Begins Rescue After Cyclone ‘Montha’; Over 19,000 Evacuated from Vulnerable Areas

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has launched extensive relief and restoration operations after Cyclone Montha battered several parts of the state, impacting 33 blocks and 11 urban areas, according to Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari.

Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Pujari said the state was well-prepared to handle the cyclone’s aftermath, with all departments working in coordination to safeguard lives and property. “Around 19,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying and high-risk zones, including 2,198 pregnant women who were shifted to safe shelters,” he said.

To ensure immediate support, the government has set up 362 free kitchens across affected regions, providing cooked meals to more than 18,700 people. The minister added that the administration had coordinated efforts with departments such as Water Resources, Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water, Rural Development, Energy, Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment, and Fisheries & Animal Resources Development for micro-level preparedness and quick response.

While light to moderate rain may continue in some areas, Pujari confirmed that the cyclone has now moved away from Odisha’s coast, and normal conditions are expected to return by October 31.

The government will begin damage assessment from October 30, with initial reports suggesting partial damage to crops and houses. Relief materials, including polythene sheets, have already been distributed to affected families for temporary shelter arrangements.

“Compensation will be disbursed after verified assessments,” Pujari said, adding that district collectors have been directed to collect beneficiaries’ bank and mobile details to ensure a transparent online transfer of funds.

He assured that all line departments remain on high alert and are actively engaged in restoring essential services, clearing debris, and extending assistance to residents recovering from the cyclone’s impact.
