Odisha Becomes First State to Announce Green Hydrogen Policy, Eyes Clean Energy Leadership

Bhubaneswar: Odisha has taken a significant lead in India’s clean energy transition by becoming the first state to announce a dedicated Green Hydrogen Policy, reinforcing its commitment to industrial decarbonization and the development of a circular economy.

The milestone initiative aligns with the broader sustainability goals of the Confederation of Indian Industry and is expected to accelerate the state’s shift towards renewable energy-driven growth.

The announcement was highlighted during a high-level meeting chaired by Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment and Energy, with members of CII and key stakeholders from the renewable energy sector.

Addressing the gathering, Singh Deo stated that the policy is poised to attract substantial investments in renewable energy, with a strong emphasis on green hydrogen production. He noted that Odisha is positioning itself as a hub for clean energy innovation while prioritizing disaster-resilient infrastructure and reforms in the power distribution sector.

The state is also advancing investments in emerging energy solutions, including floating solar projects and Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs), integrated with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), to ensure stability and efficiency in energy supply.

The Confederation of Indian Industry commended Odisha’s forward-looking approach, particularly highlighting the state’s Odisha Renewable Energy Policy 2022. Industry representatives noted that such initiatives would enable the state to tap carbon capture opportunities from flue gases, thereby reducing the industrial carbon footprint and contributing to sustainable growth.

The meeting was attended by senior officials including Vishal Kumar Dev, Additional Chief Secretary, Energy; Bhaskar Jyoti Sharma, CMD, OPTCL; along with representatives from Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited, Grid Corporation of Odisha, TP Central Odisha Distribution Limited, and other stakeholders.

With this policy, Odisha aims to position itself at the forefront of India’s green energy landscape, driving innovation, investment, and long-term sustainability in the sector.
