Odia Film Lahari to Premiere at 30th Kolkata International Film Festival

Bhubaneswar: Odia feature film Lahari, written and directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Amartya Bhattacharyya, is set to make its world premiere at the prestigious 30th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF). Produced by Jhilik Motion Pictures, Lahari will be showcased in the Indian Languages Competition section, marking it as the sole Odia film in competition this year.

The film is scheduled for three screenings on December 8, 9, and 10, during the festival, which begins on December 4, 2024. Notably, Bhattacharyya’s previous film, Adieu Godard, had won the Best Film Award at the 27th edition of KIFF, raising expectations for his latest venture.

Lahari is a visually rich and poignant narrative set against the tranquil backdrop of Odisha’s eco-tourism destinations. The film delves into themes of friendship, fatherhood, and personal growth, portraying the lives of its characters as they navigate complex relationships and the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

Bhattacharyya’s direction captures the cultural and natural beauty of Odisha, bringing to life its serene landscapes and vibrant traditions. The film is both a compelling story and a celebration of Odisha’s entrepreneurial spirit and ecological charm.

The film boasts an ensemble cast featuring Choudhury Jayaprakash Das, Choudhury Bikash Das, Dipanwit Dashmohapatra, Smruti Mahala (child artist), Susant Misra, Swastik Choudhury, and Zeinab Doer. Special appearances by notable Odia actors like Jhilik Bhattacharjee, Babusaan, Hara Rath, Debasish Patra, and Prasanjeet Mohapatra add further star power.

The music, composed by Kisaloy Roy, is enriched by playback singing from Gaurav Anand and Navya Jaiti, perfectly complementing the film’s evocative storytelling.

Sharing his excitement, Amartya Bhattacharyya, who also served as the film’s writer, cinematographer, and editor, said, “I am thrilled about the premiere at KIFF, a festival of great prestige. This collaboration with Jhilik has been memorable, and I deeply appreciate her and the team’s dedication. Every film industry needs strong, forward-thinking female producers, and I hope Lahari resonates with audiences in Odisha and beyond.”

Producer and actor Jhilik Bhattacharjee, celebrating the film’s achievement, remarked,“It is an honour to present Lahari at the 30th KIFF. Being part of such a significant event is overwhelming, and I am eager to see how audiences respond to our premiere.”

Veteran actor Choudhury Jayaprakash Das added,“Working with Amartya and his team has been a wonderful experience. I feel privileged that Lahari will premiere at this prestigious festival and hope cinephiles embrace it wholeheartedly.”

To mark the third anniversary of Jhilik Motion Pictures, the team recently unveiled the first teaser of Lahari. The teaser can be viewed here.
