NTPC Celebrates 50th Raising Day, Launches Hydrogen Buses and Advances Sustainable Technology

Noida: NTPC Ltd, India’s largest integrated power utility, marked its 50th Raising Day with grand celebrations, underscoring its half-century of contributions to India’s energy sector. At the Engineering Office Complex in Noida, Chairman and Managing Director Shri Gurdeep Singh hoisted the NTPC flag, joined by the Board of Directors and senior officials, while employees from all NTPC locations attended the event via video conferencing.

Highlighting NTPC’s commitment to clean and green energy, CMD Singh virtually launched a fleet of hydrogen-fuel buses set to operate in Leh. This initiative showcases NTPC’s drive to integrate cutting-edge hydrogen technology and reduce its carbon footprint in remote regions.

In a groundbreaking announcement, Shri Singh revealed NTPC’s achievement in synthesizing CO₂ captured from flue gas with hydrogen generated from a PEM electrolyzer, which was then converted into methanol at NTPC’s Vindhyachal plant. This innovative carbon management approach represents the first of its kind worldwide, marking a significant advancement in sustainable fuel production.

The celebration also featured the unveiling of NTPC’s special 50-year logo, symbolizing the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainable growth. The logo, with its infinity loop design, reflects NTPC’s pursuit of excellence and its legacy of powering India’s progress.

CMD Singh emphasized NTPC’s forward-looking vision, noting ongoing projects in green technologies such as Gen-4 ethanol, green urea, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel. NTPC has also developed an indigenous catalyst for methanol synthesis and continues to make strides in carbon capture and hydrogen technology.

In honor of NTPC employees’ contributions, outstanding achievements by their children were recognized, and new IT applications were launched. Additionally, a special comic book on NTPC’s Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM), the company’s flagship CSR initiative that has benefited over 10,000 girls from rural areas, was released.

Reflecting on NTPC’s journey, Shri Singh paid tribute to the company’s founders, including Dr. DV Kapoor, the founding Chairman, for their vision in laying the foundation of NTPC. “NTPC symbolizes 50 years of powering growth. Our journey towards a sustainable future includes expanding our Renewable Energy footprint, including nuclear, as we continue to create infinite possibilities,” he remarked.

NTPC Ltd. today supplies a quarter of India’s electricity, with a diversified portfolio spanning thermal, hydro, solar, and wind power. The company remains committed to delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable power, embracing best practices, and advancing innovation for a greener India.
