
Bhubaneswar: Renowned Odisha puppeteer Padma Shri Maguni Charana Kuanra passed away this morning at the age of 88. He breathed his last at his home in Keonjhar after a prolonged battle with age-related illnesses.
President Droupadi Murmu had awarded Maguni Charana Kuanra the prestigious Padma Shri in 2023, recognizing his significant contributions to the traditional art form of rod puppetry, known locally as Kathi Kundhei Nacha. His dedication to preserving and propagating this unique dance form earned him numerous accolades throughout his lifetime.
Maguni Charana Kuanra’s passion for puppetry and his exceptional skill brought him widespread acclaim. Among the many honors he received are the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja Samman from the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi, and the Kendriya Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. These awards highlight his outstanding achievements and his relentless efforts to keep the traditional art form alive.
