No Flood Threat as Baitarani River Remains Below Danger Mark: Odisha Water Resources Dept

Bhubaneswar: The water level in the Baitarani River at Akhuapada stood at 18.29 meters on Wednesday—slightly below the official danger mark but still above the warning threshold—according to Chandra Sekhar Padhi, Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department.

Quoting data from the Central Water Commission, Padhi said the river level is not expected to rise further, easing fears of a possible flood. “There is no risk of flooding at this point. We remain on alert, and all necessary precautions have been implemented. The district administration is also vigilant,” he said.

While the Baitarani’s condition remains stable, Padhi noted that water levels in other major rivers, including the Brahmani, Budhabalang, and Mahanadi, are still flowing above danger levels. Authorities continue to monitor these rivers closely.

In related developments, the Hirakud Dam has opened eight gates to release excess water, with an outflow rate of 4 lakh cusecs. The Rengali Dam is also releasing water through two gates to manage reservoir levels.

Padhi reassured the public that there is currently no flood threat in any part of the state. He emphasized that the Water Resources Department, in coordination with district authorities, is taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of residents and minimize any potential risks due to fluctuating river levels.
