New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra Named ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2023

Wellington: In a stellar recognition of his outstanding performance, New Zealand’s young cricketer Rachin Ravindra has been crowned the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year for 2023. The accolade comes as a fitting conclusion to a remarkable 12 months for the budding cricketer.

Ravindra faced tough competition for the coveted award, contending against South Africa’s quick Gerald Coetzee, Sri Lanka’s pacer Dilshan Madushanka, and India’s batter Yashasvi Jaiswal. The young Kiwi emerged victorious, thanks to his stellar performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup held in India, where he amassed an impressive 578 runs.

Expressing his excitement upon receiving the award, Ravindra shared, “It’s obviously a very special feeling. Whenever you get recognized by the ICC for something, it is always special. Reflecting back, it has been a pretty whirlwind last year, and having the opportunity to play so much cricket in so many different environments has been very special.”

Rachin Ravindra’s cricketing prowess in 2023 included impressive statistics, showcasing his impact across formats:

  • ODIs: 820 runs at an average of 41, Strike Rate of 108.03, and 18 wickets at 46.61 with an economy of 6.02.
  • T20Is: 91 runs at an average of 18.20, Strike Rate of 133.82, and 5 wickets at 32.80 with an economy of 9.11.

While he had already represented New Zealand in other formats before 2023, it was in ODIs, where he made his debut in March, that he truly displayed his cricketing prowess. Ravindra’s versatility was evident as he contributed with both bat and ball. His impactful performance in the World Cup, especially in the absence of Kane Williamson, showcased his maturity and skill.

Ravindra’s World Cup journey was marked by significant contributions, including a match-winning knock of 123* (96) against a challenging opponent. His ability to handle pressure situations and consistent performances garnered attention, making him a vital asset for New Zealand.

His tally of 578 runs in the World Cup was not only the highest for a New Zealand player but also placed him among the tournament’s top performers, with only Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Quinton de Kock surpassing him.

As Rachin Ravindra continues to make waves in international cricket, his recognition as the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year reflects the promising future that lies ahead for this young talent from New Zealand.
