Neeraj Chopra Strikes Gold at Paavo Nurmi Games 2024 in Turku

Turku, Finland: India’s javelin sensation Neeraj Chopra added another gold medal to his illustrious career, triumphing at the Paavo Nurmi Games 2024 athletics meet held in Turku, Finland, on Tuesday. The Olympic and world champion secured victory with a stellar throw of 85.97 meters in his third attempt, solidifying his form as he prepares to defend his title at the Paris 2024 Olympics later this year.

Finland’s Toni Keranen clinched the silver medal with a personal best throw of 84.19 meters, while compatriot Oliver Helander, who had previously denied Chopra the gold at this meet two years ago, took bronze with an 83.96-meter effort. Two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada finished just off the podium with a throw of 82.58 meters, landing him in fourth place.

For the 25-year-old Chopra, this victory in Turku marks his third competitive event of the 2024 season. He began the season with a strong second-place finish at the Doha Diamond League in May, registering an impressive throw of 88.36 meters, followed by a gold medal at the Federation Cup in Bhubaneswar with an 82.27-meter throw.

Returning to competition after skipping the Ostrava Golden Spike meet last month due to a minor muscle issue, Chopra opened the event with a commanding throw of 83.62 meters, leading the first series. Despite a brief slip in the second round, he unleashed his best effort of 85.97 meters in the third round to reclaim the top position. His other valid throws were 83.45 meters, 82.21 meters, and 82.97 meters, ensuring a comfortable win over the Finnish duo.
