Naveen Patnaik Expresses Concern Over Social Unrest in Odisha, Urges Govt Action

Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Naveen Patnaik has voiced serious concerns over the recent reports of social unrest in various parts of Odisha, urging the government to take immediate and comprehensive steps to protect the lives and property of citizens from all walks of life.

In a statement, Naveen Patnaik emphasized Odisha’s long-standing tradition of communal harmony and peace, expressing distress over the emerging reports of discord and violence. “Odisha is a state where communal harmony and peace have existed for ages. But it is a matter of concern that now there are reports of social unrest in different parts of the state. Many groups and aggrieved citizens have met me and expressed their concerns. It is sad that they are the victims of attacks and discrimination,” Patnaik said.

Addressing the issue on his ‘X’ handle, the BJD President appealed to all communities in the state to work together to uphold Odisha’s reputation as a peaceful and dignified state. He stressed the importance of maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.

Patnaik also called on the government and its officials to take all necessary measures to safeguard the people, highlighting that peace and harmony are essential for the state’s progress. “Peace and harmony are the hallmarks of a progressive society. Where there is peace, there is progress,” he stated.

He further noted that Odisha’s image as a benevolent and peaceful state has been a key factor in attracting investors and strengthening the state’s financial infrastructure. “Odisha’s image as a benevolent state has attracted investors to our state and strengthened our financial infrastructure. We have lifted more than 60 percent of people out of poverty,” Patnaik added.

This appeal comes in the wake of concerns raised by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who recently contacted Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, urging his intervention following reports of workers from West Bengal being assaulted, intimidated, and labeled as “Bangladeshis” by local vigilante groups in districts such as Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, and Sambalpur.

The situation has sparked widespread concern, with leaders across the political spectrum calling for swift action to restore peace and ensure the safety of all residents in the state.
