National Test House Successfully Conducts High-Altitude Tests on LED Tower Mast Light for Extreme Conditions

Kolkata: The National Test House (NTH) recently completed a customized testing initiative for the “LED Tower Mast Light,” specifically engineered for severe environmental conditions such as sub-zero, high-altitude regions and extreme hot, dusty deserts. This specialized testing, carried out by the Lamp and Photometric Laboratory of NTH (Eastern Region) in Kolkata, is aimed at ensuring the product’s reliability and durability in the most challenging environments.

The testing process, following standards IS: 16106-2012 and IS: 10322: Part-I -2014, involved photometric, electrical, and ingress protection (IP) assessments, along with specific tests requested by the customer. A notable highlight was the High-Altitude Test, conducted at over 1800 meters above sea level in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, where the LED Tower Mast Light, along with a generator set, was tested to ensure consistent functionality under low-oxygen, high-altitude conditions.

Equipped with advanced testing tools, such as a Goniophotometer and Spectro-radiometer, the NTH’s Lamp and Photometric Laboratory is well-positioned to assess LED-based lamps and luminaires, supporting India’s shift toward energy-efficient lighting for public infrastructure. This aligns with the Government of India’s energy-saving and sustainability goals, enhancing cost efficiency across public facilities.

As the only government-controlled laboratory in India offering these specialized LED testing services, NTH’s accreditation by ISO/IEC 17025:2017 through NABL underscores its commitment to safety and performance. This certification enables NTH to test products against both Indian and international standards, supporting the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision by fostering a world-class testing ecosystem that benefits local industries.

Since its establishment in 1912, NTH has served as India’s largest multi-location and multidisciplinary testing laboratory, operating under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. NTH’s role extends beyond LED testing to a wide range of industrial and consumer products, providing vital testing, calibration, and quality assurance services. The institution remains dedicated to upholding consumer rights through quality assurance, contributing to national projects, and advancing specialized testing capabilities across the country.
