MTV to Bid Farewell to Its Music Channels by Year-End

New York: For millions who grew up in the ‘90s and early 2000s, MTV was more than just a TV channel — it was a lifestyle. From waiting eagerly for the weekly Top 10 countdown to discovering pop icons through their music videos, MTV defined an entire generation’s rhythm. But that era is drawing to a close.

Paramount Global has announced that several of its music-oriented networks — MTV 80s, MTV Music, Club MTV, MTV 90s, and MTV Live — will shut down worldwide by December 31, 2025. The decision marks the end of an iconic chapter in global pop culture history.

While fans mourn the loss, MTV isn’t disappearing entirely. The company confirmed that MTV HD will continue to broadcast, focusing primarily on its hit reality shows like “Jersey Shore” and “Teen Mom”. Reality programming will remain the network’s core focus moving forward.

The closure stems from shifting viewing habits. Today’s audiences no longer rely on scheduled music programs to discover songs — they stream what they want, when they want. Platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Spotify have taken over as the go-to destinations for music and entertainment, leaving traditional TV channels struggling to keep pace.

Recent figures highlight the decline. In July 2025, MTV Music drew just 1.3 million viewers, while MTV 90s managed around 900,000. Once synonymous with youth culture and global music trends, MTV’s music networks now attract only a fraction of their past audiences.

The move is also part of a broader cost-cutting plan following Paramount Global’s merger with Skydance Media earlier this year. As the company restructures under a $500 million savings initiative, shutting down low-performing channels allows it to focus on expanding its Paramount+ streaming platform and digital content strategy.

MTV’s decision to phase out its music channels marks the end of an era — one that began with breaking music boundaries and giving a visual identity to sound. For those who grew up with its neon logos, pop anthems, and rebellious spirit, it’s a bittersweet goodbye to the soundtrack of their youth.
