Mohun Bagan Super Giant Clinch ISL Championship with Victory Over Mumbai City FC

Kolkata: In a thrilling showdown at the Salt Lake Stadium tonight, Mohun Bagan Super Giant emerged victorious over Mumbai City FC, securing a 2-1 win to claim the title of Indian Super League (ISL) Champions.

The Mariners reclaimed the championship from the Islanders in a fiercely contested battle, with Liston Colaco and Jason Cummings finding the back of the net for the home side. Despite a late surge from Mumbai City FC, courtesy of Lallianzuala Chhangte’s 89th-minute strike, Mohun Bagan Super Giant held on to their lead, even playing with 10 men after Brendan Hamill’s 91st-minute dismissal.

With this crucial victory, Mohun Bagan Super Giant soared to 48 points from 22 matches, edging past Mumbai City FC (47 points) by a solitary point to clinch the championship. Under the leadership of Antonio Lopez Habas, who took charge mid-season after a shaky start for the club, Mohun Bagan Super Giant sealed their place in ISL history with a remarkable comeback.

The breakthrough came in the 28th minute when Liston Colaco unleashed a thunderous strike from the left side of the box, capitalizing on a precise assist from Dimitrios Petratos. Eight minutes later, Jason Cummings doubled the lead with a clinical finish, sealing the fate of the match with his goal.

Although Mumbai City FC pressed hard in the second half, Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s resolute defense and strategic counter-attacks kept them at bay. Chhangte’s late goal infused hope for Mumbai City FC, but it wasn’t enough to alter the final outcome.

Amidst the jubilant celebrations at the Salt Lake Stadium, Mohun Bagan Super Giant etched their name in ISL history as the worthy champions of the 2023-24 season, showcasing resilience, determination, and skill throughout their campaign.
