
New Delhi: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has qualified in the women’s 49kg category for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics which will begin in July 23.
The former World champion is ranked second in the women’s 49kg Absolute Ranking released by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). Mirabai gathered 4133, 6172 points to be ranked second while Chinese weightlifter Hou Zhihui secured 4926, 4422 points to be ranked first as the per rankings published by IWF.
She is the lone weightlifter from India to qualify for the Tokyo games. India is hopeful
Mirabai booked her place after winning a bronze medal in the Asian Championships held in April. She lifted a total of 205kg, including a world record of 119kg in clean and jerk. At present she is training in the US.
