Ministry of Defence Signs $248 Million Deal with Rosoboronexport for T-72 Tank Engine Procurement

New Delhi: To modernize the Indian Army’s armored capabilities, the Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth $248 million with Rosoboronexport (RoE), the Russian Federation’s state intermediary for defense exports. The deal involves the procurement of 1000 HP engines for the T-72 tank fleet, in fully formed, completely knocked down, and semi-knocked down conditions.

The contract not only includes the supply of these advanced engines but also encompasses a Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement. As part of the deal, M/s Rosoboronexport will provide technology transfer to M/s Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), which operates under the Heavy Vehicle Factory in Avadi, Chennai. This collaboration will enable the licensed production of these engines in India, aligning with the government’s “Make in India” initiative to boost indigenous defense production.

The T-72 tank has been a cornerstone of India’s armored forces for decades, and currently, these tanks are equipped with a 780 HP engine. The upgrade to a 1000 HP engine will significantly enhance the battlefield mobility and offensive capabilities of the Indian Army, allowing it to better adapt to modern warfare environments. This engine upgrade is crucial for improving the performance and operational efficiency of the T-72 fleet, making it more formidable in combat scenarios.

The deal is a step forward in strengthening India’s defense sector, ensuring that the country not only remains self-reliant in defense technology but also plays a key role in the global defense manufacturing ecosystem. The collaboration with Rosoboronexport will further cement the relationship between India and Russia in the defense sector, while also providing a boost to India’s domestic manufacturing capabilities in armored vehicle production.
