Ministry of Defence Signs ₹1207.5 Crore Contract for INS Vikramaditya Refit with Cochin Shipyard

New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence today signed a contract with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for the Short Refit and Dry Docking (SRDD) of INS Vikramaditya, India’s premier aircraft carrier. The project, valued at ₹1207.5 crore, marks a significant step in enhancing the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy.

INS Vikramaditya, commissioned into the Indian Navy in November 2013, is set to undergo a comprehensive refit that will upgrade its combat capabilities. Once the refit is completed, the aircraft carrier will rejoin the active fleet, bolstering India’s maritime strength and preparedness.

The project positions Cochin Shipyard Limited as a pivotal Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) Hub, supporting India’s industrial ecosystem. The initiative will involve nearly 50 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), creating employment opportunities for over 3,500 personnel.

The refit project aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and Make in India initiatives, driving domestic capability in high-tech naval engineering and reducing dependence on foreign support for critical defence maintenance.
