Ministry of Coal Celebrates Star Rating Awards, Engages Stakeholders on MDO Framework, and Launches Coal Directory of India

New Delhi: The Ministry of Coal successfully hosted a comprehensive event today in the capital, celebrating the Star Rating Awards for Coal and Lignite Mines, conducting a Stakeholder Consultation on Mine Developers cum Operators (MDOs), and launching the Coal Directory of India. The event, aimed at recognizing exceptional mine performance and facilitating discussions on operational challenges, witnessed participation from key industry figures and government officials.

The event was graced by Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, as the Chief Guest, with Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Satish Chandra Dubey, as the Guest of Honour. Both ministers lauded the contributions of the coal sector and emphasized the importance of sustainable and responsible mining practices.

In his keynote address, G. Kishan Reddy highlighted the importance of the MDO framework in enhancing coal production and reducing reliance on imports. “The dedication of MDOs plays a critical role in achieving production targets,” said the minister, underscoring the need for coordination with state governments. He emphasized that coal will remain the primary energy source as India’s energy demand continues to rise. The minister also touched on the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, reinforcing the goal of self-reliance in the coal sector.

During an interactive session with MDO stakeholders, Reddy addressed key issues involving the Ministry of Power, Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEF&CC), and the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS). The discussion emphasized the importance of inter-ministerial coordination and received active participation from various ministry representatives, who assured their support in streamlining processes to enhance coal production and dispatch efficiency.

The Union Minister also acknowledged the welfare of mine workers and their families, highlighting the sacrifices made by those displaced by mining operations. He called for increased efforts in domestic coal production while ensuring responsible mine closures, emphasizing that India must become a global benchmark in mine closure practices within the next 3-4 years.

Satish Chandra Dubey, the Guest of Honour, spoke on the crucial role MDOs play in India’s coal sector, noting the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector. He congratulated the awardees of the Star Rating System, which encourages environmentally sustainable and responsible mining practices.

Vikram Dev Dutt, Secretary of the Ministry of Coal, provided an insightful address on the evolving landscape of coal mining and the importance of the MDO framework in driving efficiency and sustainability. He praised the collaboration between the public and private sectors, stating that this synergy is key to the sector’s long-term growth.

At the event, 43 mines were awarded the prestigious Five Star Rating for their outstanding performance in mining operations, environmental practices, and worker safety for the year 2022-23. In addition, the iGOT-Karmayogi Awards were presented, recognizing excellence in various categories, alongside the Swachhata Awards, which honored cleanliness and sustainability initiatives within the coal sector.

The Coal Directory of India was also released, serving as a comprehensive resource for insights into coal and lignite production, sectoral dispatches, and other critical aspects of the industry.

This event reaffirmed the Ministry of Coal’s commitment to promoting sustainable mining practices, enhancing collaboration within the sector, and driving the growth and development of the Indian coal industry. The initiatives discussed and the awards presented emphasized a forward-looking approach to meet India’s energy needs while fostering responsible mining operations.
